In the frieze above the door in the St Sebastian Chapel, stands the maxim ‘TIS HAEST GETROUT DAT LANGE ROUT’ – Marry in haste, repent at leisure – in golden Gothic letters. This is a warning not to enter into a marriage too swiftly. This door leads to the chamber of the commissioners for marital affairs. This is the room where couples gave notice of their intention to marry, of which Rembrandt van Rijn and his wife Saskia van Uylenburgh are a renowned example.
