Valery Vermeulen (BE) is a multimedia artist, electronic musician and producer and mathematician. He holds a PhD in pure mathematics and is interested in the relationship between music and emotions and the possibilities of automatic image and sound generation. With his performative lecture in the Church Master's Chamber, he brought the latest technology to the city's oldest building. His installations and performances are both the result of, and a critique of, recent scientific and technological developments, including artificial intelligence and econometrics. Whereas the sound of the organ in the Oude Kerk is determined by analogue algorithms, Vermeulen worries about the digital algorithms and systems that have gripped the financial markets.
