Into the Air: L'uomo volante

Dressed in a kind of aviator's suit, here and there covered with a feather and some postcards, Marinus Boezem became a flying man (l'uomo volante) in 1979 in the Vleeshal in Middelburg. With the help of ropes over his shoulders, he was balanced with a mirror that was exactly the same weight as himself. When it became too heavy, the artist let go of the ropes and the mirror fell back. For a few seconds it seemed as if Boezem flew up, after which the mirror fell to the floor in shards. The image of Boezem had disappeared and the gothic vault of the Vleeshal became fragmentarily visible.

37 years later, the performance was performed again, this time under the Gothic vault of the Oude Kerk. On 14 January 2017, l'Uomo Volante disappeared again in the presence of the artist.
