Deep listening is an all-encompassing listening, at any time. Developed by composer Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016), this method explores the use of our consciousness, our ability to train and develop our senses, navigating between the involuntary nature of hearing and the voluntary, selective nature of listening. Both beginners and more experienced ears were welcomed to participate in this interactive exercise, where listening was explored as an active process and participants were invited to strengthen the connection with themselves and others, by sounding and listening themselves.
In this workshop, musicologist and writer Jo Kali used the method of Deep Listening to direct visitors' listening experience in the Oude Kerk, in relation to ' The Instrument of Troubled Dreams ', a site-specific installation by Janet Cardiff (1957) and George Bures. Miller (1960) composed in and around the church. Following the practice of Oliveros, participants were guided through sonic meditations (sound, listening and movement exercises) - in order to experience an increased awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and the ability to experiment, improvise and play with amplify sound.
