How can sound be used as a medium to still preserve a culture and a landscape that is transforming? This question is present in both Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman 's work and Adrián Villar Rojas' installation. During this evening, two compositions by Nyirabikali Lierman were performed in the North Side aisle, with only the glow of the candlelight of Villar Rojas' installation. We listened to Just Outside the Wombskin (2012, radio composition, 10'10", 4.2 cross stereo) an ode to the land of Lierman's ancestors and based on recordings of her grandfather's house and village. The Girl, the Turtle and the Earthquake (2014, radio composition, 14"07, 4.2. cross stereo, viola) is an abstracted interpretation of the story of Lay Sion, a survivor of the 2011 Fukushima disaster. In the piece, a voice gradually emerges from sonic material that looks back at the moment of the disaster. viola player Maya Felixbrodt responded live to the electronic soundtrack. Afterwards, curator Radna Rumping talked to Nyriabikali Lierman about her work at the St Sebastian Chapel.
