For The World After, artist Sarah van Sonsbeeck pondered the following question: How can we protect, without excluding?
‘Will corona bring change? Unfortunately, the crisis has inspired populist leaders to push their agendas and close borders. While in a time of crisis, openness and solidarity are needed. In 1988, just after a heavy stock market crash, Paul Carroll designed his World flag as a symbol of worldwide positive change and a celebration of cultural diversity. Crisis is disruptive, but it can also create new perspectives. My World Flag is an ode to Carroll’s; the original colours resurface in a new design in which the boundaries between the colours are symbolically open. Let’s respectfully hit walls, if that’s what we need to investigate our borders on the way to more openness.’
During lockdown, van Sonsbeeck also designed a candle with the words 'I burn for you' - translated into different languages. Visitors could light them on Wednesdays and Sundays.
