This mourning shield was made for Jacob Baron de Petersen, who died on 20 January 1780. Baron de Petersen, who came from a prosperous Danish family, accrued a personal fortune and reputation from his time as Director General of the Dutch West India Company, for which he was stationed on West Africa’s Gold Coast from 1741 to 1747.
