Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman

Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman (RW/BE) was born in Rwanda but grew up in Belgium from the age of two. She is an independent radio producer, vocalist and composer. A major source for her work are her personal field recordings: a rich collection of unique sounds and soundscapes from both rural and urban East Africa. Sound-bit by sound-bit, she transforms and moulds these sounds into a form she calls 'Afrique Concrète' (referring to Musique Concrète).

In recent years, Lierman has reconnected with the land of her ancestors, and with her grandfather, Kanyoni Ladislas. He is 110 years old, lives on volcano Mt Karisimbi in Rwanda and is perhaps one of the last pre-colonial traditional hunters and traditional doctors. Lierman visits him as often as possible to record their ongoing conversations about his past, while she also captures the landscape around her grandfather's house and village.
