Together with typographer Will Holder (1969), Germaine Kruip performs a piece by the American composer Robert Ashley (VS, 1930 – 2014). By using the medium of television, Ashley brought contemporary opera outside of the framework of the theatre. He defined opera as ‘characters in a landscape who tell stories through music.’ All of his pieces explore how the environment is reshaped by speech, and vice versa. In his composition The Entrance, coins are carefully stacked on the two keyboards of the Vater-Müller organ creating a ‘drone’ that very gradually changes in tone. The performance, lasting for approximately 150 minutes, is physically demanding and requires tremendous concentration. Robert Ashley explains: ‘I have never understood the meaning of The Entrance. It was ‘inspired’. I think that it was a way to be transported into different states of mind’. The live performance is staged in the Oude Kerk during the opening of the exhibition on 25 November 2015. Functioning as an audio installation, a sound recording of the performance will be permanently present within the exhibition. The stacked coins subtly refer to the work Column Untitled, which is also part of the exhibition.
