Netochka Nezvanova was an infamous online character who made an unforgettable impression within the net art community in the mid-1990s. On 16 February 2018, Netochka, also described as 'The Most Feared Woman on the Internet', was remembered again at the Oude Kerk, during a programme curated with net art expert Josephine Bosma.
Netochka (also known as antiorp, integer or =cw4t7abs) was a mysterious online character (or was it several people? It is unknown exactly who was behind this online persona). A software programmer, artist, critic but also unaccountable pro VOC ateur, who seemed to disappear from the face of the earth overnight. To this day, she has remains elusive. During the pioneering days of internet art, she built up a tight-knit online community, through unexpected online outbursts of anger and posts that we would today classify under 'trolling'. In a ceremonial moment, we were introduced to the person and myth surrounding Netochka. We moved in procession past film, sound and testimonials from artists and thinkers of today. Together, this evoked the spirit of this 'internet troll' avant la lettre. With contributions by Josephine Bosma, Martijn van Boven, David Gauthier, Geert Lovink and Damon Zucconi.
