Michiel van Iersel (NL, 1978) works as an urbanist and curator at the intersection of the arts, architecture, urban transformation, and ecology. He started his career as a curator at various (visual) arts institutions, before founding the cultural collective Non-fiction with others. In addition, Michiel co-founded De Verdieping (2010 - 2015), the experimental cultural programme of club and restaurant TrouwAmsterdam, and the international research platform Failed Architecture. From 2013 - 2018, he (co)directed several programmes at the Oude Kerk, including New Time for the Oude Kerk, Come Closer, and Misericordia. In 2015/2016, he co-curated the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) and from 2018/2019 he was a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
He currently holds the role of Program Lead of the Chair of Architecture and Urban Transformation at ETH Zurich. Michiel has over two decades of experience advising and (re)activating a wide mix of (civil society) organisations, including UNESCO, the City of Amsterdam and several other cultural institutions and governments. Michiel regularly lectures and writes in various media on topical issues and was, among other things, co-author of the book Rewriting Architecture 10+1 Actions for an Adaptive Architecture (Valiz, 2020).
