In 'Arrival and Departure' the Indonesian artist Iswanto Hartono imagines what Banda looked like when Jan Pieterszoon Coen approached the island with his ship in the 17th century. Slowly, on a number of screens presented in a showcase, images of modern-day Banda pass by. The work is part of a site-specific installation that Hartono developed for Oude Kerk as part of Europalia Indonesia. In several works, he explored the relationship between Indonesian history and the imagery of Dutch colonialism.
The Dutch invaded the islands in the 17th century to take control of nutmeg and mace production. The local population was massacred in 1621 by the Dutch led by Jan Pieterszoon Coen and replaced by slaves from Madagascar and Indians. Fort Belgica on Banda was built by the VOC and remains the largest European fort in Indonesia.
