A regular construction lift was placed in the middle of the celebration; the heart of the Oude Kerk. The somewhat noisy lift transported individual visitors 19 metres Into the Air , up to the moon-shaped window. On the way, they got a completely different view of the monumental space, seeing details you cannot perceive down below on the ground. The lift ended at a round mirror in which you encountered your own reflection. Here, the artist left a personal message.
The relationship with the vertical lines in Gothic architecture was also a reference to the immaterial that transcends humans. The bird's eye view reconstructed, as it were, the (polder) Gothic architecture of the Oude Kerk. The relationship between the present and the past was also clearly present in this work. The modern lift - a deus ex machina - is normally used to dismantle the organ and was now suddenly in harmony with the historical space.
