Gothic Gestures consisted of a canvas with the map of the Oude Kerk embroidered on it. 51 volunteers (50 women and 1 man) spent months working on this map embroidered in cross stitch. They worked at a cross-shaped table, four afternoons a week on the enormous rug measuring 5.50 x 3.80 meters. The cloth was a collective and artisanal making process, just as the construction of the Oude Kerk once was. The slow progress of the embroidery reflected the long-term evolution of the building, shaping a relationship between history, craft, environment and the artist's conceptual practice.
Floor plans of cathedrals are a point of reference in the work of Marinus Boezem. There is his work from the Green Cathedral, to which this was a clear reference. But he also recorded the church plan of Reims cathedral in the woods near Paleis Het Loo. The Oude Kerk is the first Dutch church to be given a place in cross stitches in Boezem's oeuvre.
