Iswanto Hartono's (ID, 1972) interdisciplinary practice focuses mainly on issues of history, time, space and urbanity. The artist, trained as an architect, is interested in exploring structure and form, and in researching the alternative uses of a space. Hartono's work aims a critical awareness of a space. The artist questions what space actually is or how it has been perceived as a matter of course. Hartono is particularly interested in Indonesian traditions and a history that is often forgotten today. Previous projects revolved around colonization and the struggle for identity in a contemporary Indonesia.
