Taturo Atzu titled his rooftop installation ' The Garden Which Is the Nearest to God '. But does this garden bring us closer to God? How can art bring about a religious experience, or otherwise provide meaning? Several speakers this evening reflected on the tension -or rather the merging- of the sacred and secular in visual art. They included Jan-jaap Stegeman , theologian and pioneer of the Oude Kerk congregation, artist Hans van Houwelingen, philosopher Reine Rek and researcher Pooyan Tamimi Arab, whose work includes contemporary religious diversity and how it manifests itself in architecture and design. The conversation was moderated by Michiel van Iersel and Radna Rumping, and began with a music recording by Simeon ten Holt, contributed by Jan-Jaap Stegeman.
